Scaling Social Impact and Innovative Health Organizations

We are on the eve of the second Social Impact Exchange conference which will be held June 15 – 16. The conference last year, which was covered by Geri Stengel of Ventureneer and myself, focused on defining scaling organizational growth to increase social impact while presenting discussions on developing growth capital systems and the need for philanthropic collaborations. A summary of the conference coverage is available here. Geri will again host the blog coverage for the conference, which can also be tracked on Twitter under the hashtag #SIEX2011.

Over the past year, the field has evolved further. The Social Impact Exchange created a working group to extend and support further research and knowledge development in the field. The introduction of Social Impact Bonds and the Pay for Success program (thoughtfully covered by Sean Stannard-Stockton) have generated new opportunities to generate resources for nonprofits looking to scale growth. Much of these subjects will be covered during the two day conference.

One subject that I hope comes up – either at the conference or at the special symposium taking place today for nonprofits interested in increasing their knowledge and understanding of the scaling impact field – focuses on the absence of innovative health projects being presented as models. Last year, not one project presented during the business plan competitions reflected an innovative approach to health, healthcare service delivery, or healthcare products. Instead the innovations worthwhile of consideration for scaling growth addressed poverty alleviation, workforce development, and education. I truly doubt that there are no such efforts underway focused on innovations in health. My hope is that we can uncover some examples this year as well as reflect on the accomplishments of other programs that have benefited from funding support in their efforts to scale their impact through growth.
